Here are a few success stories of how Sri Arunodayam has helped to unite children with their parents and also about the how life at Sri Arunodayam has changed the quality of life for inmates.

A young couple, Mohana and her husband had a son. Mohana suffered mild mental illness. Their son was born with moderate mental retardation. These being enough reasons to walk out of matrimony, Mohana's husband abandoned her and their son Manikandan. Left to making a living for herself and her son, Mohana started working at an export unit, even as she was mentally ill.

With the father no longer around, the mother away at work, Manikandan was left to himself. He started begging in and around the slum where they lived. This child who is mentally retarded to the moderate degree, learnt no language, nor was he provided education. The only two words he would utter were Money and Food . He was a voracious eater.

A social worker, who learnt the plight of Mohana and Manikandan, brought the mother and son to Sri Arunodayam. Mohana was provided treatment for her mental illness and now works with Sri Arunodayam as a Health Care Worker.

Manikandan who was 5 years old when he joined Sri Arunodayam could hardly communicate. This child , 8 years old now has developed language and communication abilities. He now studies Upper Kinder Garten in a nearby regular school. The best part of the story is that the habit of begging has withered off. He has developed good habits, dresses up neatly and carries himself well. Thanks to the persistent efforts of the team at Sri Arunodayam.

Sri Arunodayam has heart rending stories of children who have re-united with their families. In the past three years, 1 2 children have been handed over to their families.

Here are a few instances of children returning to their families.

  1. Manikandan was rescued from Villivakkam Railway Station by the Police and he came to us on 26.09.2004. We traced his parents and officially handed him over to them on 09.08.2005.
  2. Karthick was rescued on 13.04.2006 by the Police and handed over to us. We successfully traced his parents and he returned to his family on 05.08.2006.
  3. Krishna was rescued at Porur, a suburb in Chennai, by our social worker on 27.04.2006. We located his parents and the reunion took place on 15.08.2006.
Subramanian, was 28 years old when he joined Sri Arunodayam family. Two years ago, he was handed over to Sri Arunodayam by the Commissioner of Police, Chennai. He is mentally retarded to a mild degree. When he came here, he was extremely violent, lazy, preferred only to eat and sleep.

Life at Sri Arunodayam has changed Subramanian very much. The love, care, attention and patience have made him an independent and responsible person. Today, he works at Sri Arunodayam. He d resses the children, carries food, vegetable s , and accompanies the Health Care Worker to hospital visits, goes out to collect donations in kind. He was provided one y ear training and for the past one year he has been employed. We are proud to say that he is now a salaried employee of Sri Arunodayam. We notice that he is growing more r esponsible by the day.
