Rescue
Rescue is our prime activity. We rescue children found abandoned in public places such as railway stations, hospitals, markets, places of worship and roads. Each child that comes to us carries a gruesome story of abandonment.

Hemi was a month old baby when her parents brought her to the General Hospital in Chennai for a check-up. The doctors told the parents that she is a mentally challenged child and will face certain limitations as she grows up. Not wanting to bear the responsibility, the parents dumped the child in the toilet and went away.

Many children are heartlessly ‘loaded’ into the unreserved compartments of trains. Some travel until the destination while others get off the train and land anywhere. In addition, there are stories of children who are left at crowded markets, fairs and places of worship. Invariably, these children are not able to provide proper information about themselves, their hometown and family.

This being the scenario, the Government of Tamil Nadu has recognized Sri Arunodayam as a Reception home. The mentally challenged children who are found abandoned in the districts of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Villupuram and Ranipet are sent to Sri Arunodayam by the respective district Child Welfare Committees.

We admit children who are referred to us by the Department of Social Defense. Other sources through which children reach us are, through the Police help line, Public and Child Help Line. Whichever the source may be, they are routed to us through the Department of Social Defense.

The rescued child is produced in the Juvenile Committee, which directs Sri Arunodayam to provide care and protection for the child. The rescue activity is complete once the legal formalities are over and the child is admitted into the home.
