Activities of Sri Arunodayam
Presently, Sri Arunodayam houses sixty inmates . The age group of inmates range from one month old baby to thirty year old adult. Sri Arunodayam caters to the needs of the abandoned mentally challenged and spastic children. They also provide round the clock service and homely environment to the destitute , despite their age and condition . A brief description of the activities at Arunodayam are listed below.
Crisis intervention - We receive calls from the public and through child help line we rescue children from the streets and other public places.
Shelter for the abandoned mentally challenged - We provid e free shelter, care and clothing to children we admit as inmates.
Professional Therapy - We provide holistic therapy to children for their overall improvement . These include Physiotherapy, Occupational and S peech therapy.
Special Education - We impart special education training for the children to develop their cognitive abilities and improve their self help activities.
Psychiatric treatments and medicines - All the children need psychiatric attention. Some of them frequently go through epileptic seizures. The P sychiatrist and Neurologist on our panel regularly monitor and treat the inmates.
Short stay home for the homeless mentally challenged - We also extend short stay facility for the homeless mentally challenged children. The children rescued by police are referred by the Child Welfare Committee to Sri Arunodayam for a short stay . They stay here until we receive a final order from the Child Welfare Committee.
24 Hours Help line – We are equipped to handle the welfare of abandoned mentally challenged children , round the clock . Sri Arunodayam receives calls for assistance from the public, when they notice such children abandoned on the streets . (Help line poster to be inserted here)
Home Based Support – We support parents who are unable to bring up the mentally retarded or spastic children, due to poverty. We provide means for the parents to make a livelihood for themselves. So far, we have helped such parents to set up a small home based idly shop and laundry service. Occasionally, we support them by providing groceries, medicines and the like.
Networking and referrals - We network with similar Organizations for transferring the children for appropriate placement.
Documentation - We maintain individual records for all the children , which hold exhaustive details of immunization, medical history and follow ups.
Admission Procedure
Sri Arunodayam follows a procedure for admitting orphaned inmates into its fold.
- A physical examination is performed on the child and a primary report is prepared.
- An FIR or memo is filed with the local police station to take the child into the trust's custody.
- The child is then produced before the Juvenile Court for procuring an order to enable the child to stay at Sri Arunodayam.
- After completing the above procedures, a medical examination and a psychiatric check-up is done to assess the level of illness.
